Troels Wörsel is presenting two parallel exhibitions under the joint title La pittura. One is at HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art where he is showing new paintings from the recent year. The other is at Galleri Susanne Ottesen where he has made site-specific wall paintings covering the walls from floor to ceiling. Together the two shows encapsulate key themes in Troels Wörsel’s work breaching the formal and representational possibilites of painting.
The wall paintings exist in a space between image and architecture. They are based on the physical dimensions of the architecture which is also determining the scale of the works. Many of the pictures consist of compound spaces; collisions between form and text, abstract and referential elements, shadows and reflections. Because they are painted directly on the wall they are not delimited from the surrounding space but seem to encompass it. They temporarily cancel the white cube in favour of a large-scale tableau of contrasting images; a complex and colourful construction of space within space.
