Biography & CV
Stig Brøgger (1941-2021) was born in Slagelse, Denmark. Brøgger studied Political Science at the University of Copenhagen from 1960-67 and was part of The Experimental Art School (The Ex-School) in Copenhagen from 1964-66. He was Professor of painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1981-97 and lecturer at the School of Architecture from 1970-75.
Major solo exhibitions include Kunstmuseum Brandts, Odense, Denmark (1998); the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), Copenhagen, Denmark (1990) and Sophienholm, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark (1986). Brøgger participated in the Sharjah Biennale in the United Arab Emirates in 2001. In 1974 he founded the Institute for Scale Art (Institut for Skalakunst) with Hein Heinsen and Mogens Møller, creating projects at the intersection of art, architecture and urban planning. The Institute for Scale Art represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale in 1978. Brøgger received the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1998 and the Eckersberg Medal in 1991.
The artist is represented in several prominent public collections, including ARoS, the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) and The New Carlsberg Foundation in Denmark; the Henie-Onstad Art Center in Norway; Moderna Museet and Malmö Konstmuseum in Sweden; and MoMA and Nevada Museum of Art in the USA.
