Biography & CV
Richard Deacon (b. 1949 in Bangor, Wales, UK) lives and works in London, UK. Deacon received his BA from the Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1972 and his MA in Environmental Media from the Royal College of Art in 1977. He was Professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2009-2015 and Professor at Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris from 1999-2009, as well as visiting professor of sculpture in various other art schools.
Selected solo exhibitions include Beaux-Arts de Paris, Paris, France (2018); Musée de la Ville de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France (2010); Portland Art Museum, Portland, USA (2008); PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, USA (2001); MACCSI, Caracas, Venezuela (1996); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, UK (1989) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA (1988). Deacon had a retrospective at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Germany in 2011 and he represented Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2007. He also participated in the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012, as well as the Glasgow International in 2006 and documenta 9 in 1992. Among awards Deacon received the Turner Prize in 1987. He was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the Ministry of Culture, France in 1996 and made a CBE in 1999.
The artist is represented in several prominent public collections worldwide, including Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark; Fondazione Prada in Italy; Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Spain; Tate in the UK and Carnegie Museum of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and MoMA in the USA.
