Biography & CV
German-Polish artist, Nina Nowak, explores the relationship between animate and inanimate matter. Her artistic research draws her to study in depth what she refers to as the “borderlands” that distinguish living and non-living matter. Working across a broad array of media and materials, she is interested in investigating questions of the human body and its inorganic extensions. Drawing inspiration from the domains of anthropology, literature, history and biology, Nowak has developed a practice that is both deeply rooted in research and materiality. The installation as a functional set-up for different processes of material transformation, as well as the functional object as an extension of the human body, are recurring themes in her work.
Nina Nowak (b. 1984, Poznan, Poland) lives and works between Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark. Nowak holds an MFA from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. In 2022, the artist held a research scholarship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig, Germany. She is an alumnus of the Jan Van Eyck Institute and has been awarded the prize for Abstract Sculpture of Diakonie Michaelsvhoven, Cologne, Germany (2022). From 2021-22, Nowak was awarded with the project grant by Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn. In 2018, Nowak was awarded a one-year working grant program by Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn (Cultural Foundation of Germany) and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia supported her work with an individual working grant in 2017. In 2019, she was artist in residence at Art Hub Copenhagen. Her work has been shown at Copenhagen Contemporary (2923); Darren Knight Gallery in 2022; ARKEN museum for contemporary art (2022), the Korean Cultural Center in London (2022); Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany (2019); and Horsens Kunstmuseum, Horsens, Denmark (2018) amongst others. Horsens Kunstmuseum holds four of Nowak’s works in their permanent collection.
