TREUDDK

 

The word TREUDDK is an anagram of Turkey, Germany, Denmark and Europe. It is also a new word in itself, actually the first common European word to exist. Thereby it is an image of a new kind of community which this exhibition possibly is inventing, or in any case hinting at. TREUDDK also refers to the native countries of Nanna Abell, Sakir Gökcebag, Nasan Tur and Bjørn Nørgaard, which are here exhibiting together for the first time. The exhibition owes its existence to a cooperation between Bjørn Nørgaard, René Block and the gallery. It is a meeting point between Danish and Turkish art focusing on works situated between sensuality and social space.

The works of Nanna Abell (b. 1985, DK) contain a series of conflicting experiences of childhood, sexuality, festivity, luxury and melancholy opening for another relation between objects, bodies and identity. In the exhibition Nanna Abell is showing a 3.5 meter tall sculpture cast in silicone, a photo-based work and a series of small objects cast in coloured concrete.

The works of Sakir Gökcebag (b. 1965, Turkey) are characterized by lightness, simplicity and silent humour. The works in the exhibition are based on everyday objects such as umbrellas and spirit levels, which have been cut, shifted, reassembled, multiplied etc. in open spatial constellations. The works of Sakir Gökcebag refer to ornamentation, memory, and the fragility of perception due to how the objects are present both as materiality, image and language.

Nasan Tur (b. 1974, Germany) is focusing on symbols of power and dissent in public space, on tensions between state power and the people, on activism and passivity. In the exhibition he is participating with a series of etchings and a video work, both of which are based on graffiti texts found in Berlin’s cityscape. Each of the two works are investigating the limits of communication and different kinds of anti-language.

The figurative works of Bjørn Nørgaard (b. 1947, DK) are eclectic, inclusive, politically engaged, apolitical, often with touches of humour. They include everyday realism, mythology, comics, art history and autobiography. To the exhibition Bjørn Nørgaard has made a new series of 18 unique bronze sculptures based on media images. As a whole they become a model of a contemporary society of anger, love, loneliness and hope.
